Coaches,I hope your sessions developing players and the teams are going well - instructive, challenging, and fun for your players. I have seen many teams implementing the Skill Daily Five - awesome to see! We have dropped the number of juggles to 50 for our U8 academy team (also have been proactive encouraging/ overseeing them as we want honest and quality touches). My U12s are jumping right in with the Skill Daily Five - even if they arrive early which is awesome. Please share if you have had succes or have made any modifications (reply to all so we can all see).
This week I wanted to share two articles in HOW we talk with our players.
#1 - "Say it carefully, quickly, carefully" - http://www.socceramerica.com/article/55958/say-it-carefully-quickly-clearly-qa-with-dou.html
#2 - "Don't get mad at your players for struggling" - http://www.socceramerica.com/article/56048/dont-get-mad-at-kids-for-struggling-qa-with-d.html
Both articles talk about the efficiency and the pwer of our words. I have the players do a self-assessment in the offseason and I also ask for feedback on my coaching that asks the players to finish the sentence: "Coach, I have a tough time when you_____________________________________." From time to time, I have a player finish the sentence with "when you are mad at me." While this is hard to hear, it does provide a place to start a conversation with the player and helps me reflect on HOW I am trying to help the players.
Please read the two articles (they are short). I know you have smaller numbers at practice this week due to Spring Break (I hope you are all STILL practicing through - even if mixing with another team). TRY out the suggestions here in the links. MAKE IT A GOAL to be more efficient and positive with your words.
Thanks for all your time with the players!
